New polyacrylonitrile films are being developed by NJ Inst. of Technology in cooperation with Solcas Polymer. The PAN films have dry oxygen transmission rates only 16% that of EVOH. At 80% relative humidity, the oxygen transmission rate of the PAN film is less than half that of EVOH. The PAN film has "excellent stability toward exposure to UV radiation," says Solcas researcher L. Ross. "The processing scheme has the potential to be used for high-speed, high-volume production at very competitive costs," Ross adds.
