New Department of Transportation authority to open and inspect hazardous material packages could enhance efforts to discover undeclared hazardous material shipments,according to a Government Accountability Office report released March 29.A more effective system for detecting undeclared shipments would help antiterrorism efforts as well,GAO said.According to the report,New DOT Efforts May Provide Additional Information on Undeclared Shipments,DOT and the Department of Homeland Security could provide only limited information on the amount of undeclared hazmat discovered entering the United States.
