The recent move by the national petrochemical company of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to secure a majority stake in Europe's second largest polyolefins manufacturer,Bore-alis (see PIE 14,2005),was not at all surprising.It was at "K 2004" that Middle East companies such as Iran's NPC -whose attempt to take over Basell failed solely due to political reasons - and Saudi Arabia's Sabic really began to shift into the spotlight of the plastics world.
