Lanxess AG (Leverkusen,Germany) reports that it has developed a "hard/soft" composite that not only handles the high heat and other extreme conditions facing auto engine components but also offers cost-effective processing. The composite is based on the "optimal integration" of special grades of Durethan polyamide, serving as the hard engineering thermoplastic, and a variant of Therban hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) as the elastomer component.
