To detect the genetic variations of gliadin and high molecular weight (HMW) glutenin subunits in Triticum turanicum Jakubz., 87 accessions from 24 countries were analysed using acid polyacryl-amide gel electrophoresis (A-PAGE) and sodium dodecyl sulphate poly-acrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and 72 gliadin patterns were identified. The genetic similarity (GS) of gliadin ranged from 0.240 to 1.000, with a mean of 0.693. Clustering analysis indicated that the genetic variation of gliadin in T. turanicum was associated with its geographical distribution. Two and five HMW-GS alleles were identified at Glu-Al and Glu-Bl, respectively. For the Glu-Bl locus, subunits 13+16, associated with good bread-making quality, were the most frequent subunits in T. turanicum, whereas it was rare or appeared with a low frequency in bread wheat and durum wheat. The variation of Glu-Al was similar to bread wheat and durum wheat, and subunit null was the most common allele. These results suggested that gliadinand HMW-glutenin subunits could represent useful markers for the evaluation of genetic variation in T. turanicum and subsequently for their future utilization.
