Collecting germplasm of wild and cultivated yam (Dioscorea spp.) in Guinea

Yam germplasm collecting missions have been undertaken in various countries of West and Central Africa (Zoundjihekpon and Tio-Touré 1992). However, no germplasm collecting has yet been conducted in Guinea. Earlier reports on the importance and domestication of Guinea yams (D. rotundata and D. cayenensis) have been published (Coursey 1976; Hahn 1995). Domestication of Guinea yams is reported to have taken place in West Africa between the Bandama River in Central Cote d I'voire (the Western limit) and Cameroon.
