Provenance variation in seed characters of Acacia nilotica subsp. indica(Benth.) Brenan

The potential of Acacia nilotica subsp. indien (Benth.) Brenan (locally known as 'babul') as a multipurpose tree has been recognized worldwide (National Academy of Sciences 1980). This species is widely distributed throughout the dry and hot regions of India ranging from 9 to 34°N latitude and 72 to 92°E longitude, and ascending to an altitude of 900 m. It experiences an absolute maximum temperature of 40 to 50°C, minimum temperature of -5 to 15°C, and a mean rainfall of 75 to 1300 mm.
