Creation and composition of the Brassica oleracea core collection

A core collection of the Brassica oleracea genepool (BOCC) was created for an EU (European Union) project entitled: The location and exploitation of genes for pest and disease resistance in European genebank collections of horticultural brassicas'. For the development of this core collection the European Brassica database (Bras-EDB) proved to be of great value. The BOCC was partly based on pragmatic considerations because of the needs and time constraints of the project, and can be seen as the basisfor the development of a more widely coordinated B. oleracea core collection. In the process of creating the BOCC a new tool was introduced: the path indicator. The path indicator allows a good overview of the content of the core collection, It points togroups of material instead of individual accessions and can therefore contribute to a better-interpretation of evaluation results, It also allows for a better selection of material, in answering requests from users.
