A proposal has already been made for an evolutionary classification of the Brassica oleracea group by Gladis and Hammer (1994). To reconstruct the ways of diversification and concentration, some long-distance crossing experiments have been conducted.Morphologically homogeneous botanical varieties from distinct convarieties were used. Mother plants were harvested separately. Groups of higher variable plants in the F generation were observed, whose ranges of variation were concentrated near those of the respective maternal plants. Identical characters in morphology were obtained in only a very few plants of this generation. If these few were used for further intercrosses, the F generation developed very homogeneous characters which were stable in subsequent generations. This effect might be of interest for further studies on Brassica genetics and should be used in plant breeding.
