In field experiments in 1989/90 in the La Plata area, Argentina, potatoes cv. Mailen were given foliar applications of 50 mg benzylaminopurine [benzyladenine] (BAP)/litre at tuber initiation (control), 34 days after emergence (DAE), 54 DAE or 62 DAE. In greenhouse experiments in 1991/92, cv. Spunta plants from minitubers and in vitro-produced plantlets were given no growth regulators or foliar applications of 50 mg BAP + 50 mg gibberellic acid (GA)/litre 30 and 37 days after planting/transplanting,while in 1992 cv. Huinkul, Kennebec and plants from minitubers and in vitro-produced plantlets of Spunta were given no growth regulators or foliar application of 5 ml Biozyme (a commercial product containing IAA, GA3 and zeatin)/litre. In Mailen, application of BAP after emergence increased the number of tubers of <80 g, while applications 54 and 62 DAE also increased tuber number in the 80-400 g fraction. As a result of BAP applications, tuber yield was also significantly increased. In the greenhouseexperiments, BAP + GA increased minituber production of Spunta in vitro plantlets, while Biozyme increased minituber production by both types of planting stock. Minituber production by Huinkul and Kennebec was not affected by Biozyme.
