EPA Denies Animal Welfare Activist Petition Seeking More Focused Endocrine Program

The Environmental Protection Agency has denied a petition from two animal welfare organizations that asked the agency to focus its endocrine dis-ruptor screening program on how chemicals affect humans and comply with congressional deadlines for the program mandated by the 1996 Food Quality Protection Act.In denying the petition,Susan B.Hazen,EPA's acting assistant administrator for toxic substances,said in a Feb.10 memo that the two animal advocacy groups misconstrued the requirement under FQPA.The act called for EPA to "develop" the program by Aug.3,1998,and "implement" the program by Aug.3,1999.
