Synthesis and Structure of(4S,5S)-(-)-p-MethyIthio Analogue of(4S,5S)-(+)-Isocytoxazone

(+)-Thiomicamine,an industrial waste product,has been transformed into(-)-(4S,5S)-4-hydroxymethyl-5-p-methylthiophenylxazolidin-2-one,a sulfur analog of isocytoxa-zone,the regioisomer of the potent cytokine modulator,(-)-cytoxazone.Isocytoxazones 1 and the potent cytokine modulator(-)-cytoxazone 2 are regio-isomers incorporating a 4,5-disubstituted 1,3-oxazolidin-2-one unit(Fig.1).
