Activities of several cauliflower mosaic caulimovirus (CaMV) 35S and figwort mosaic caulimovirus (FMV) 34S promoter derivatives fused to the gusA [uidA] reporter gene were compared in suspension-cultured C. roseus cells that were transiently and stably transformed using particle bombardment. The 35S and a deletion derivative of the 34S promoter combined with particle bombardment conferred high levels of expression in cells. Enhancer multimerization did not have a positive effect on promoter activity in contrast to results obtained with other plant species, indicating that absolute and relative promoter activities can differ between plant species.
