A field experiment was conducted in Poland during 1999 and 2000 to investigate the N uptake and N use efficiency of triticale-faba bean intercrops and sole crops under different N rates: 0, 25 and 50 kg/ha. Sowing rates were 500, 90 and 250 + 45 seeds/m2. Biomass yield increased with increasing N rates. N uptake in the grains was higher in the intercrops by 16.7 and 32% than sole triticale and faba bean crops, respectively. Triticale outcompeted faba beans in the intercrop due to higher dry matter yield and relative N uptake by triticale. The highest N rate reduced N harvest index and N use efficiency regardless of cropping method.
