DB 'OK' to takeover UK freight carrier

Deutsche Bahn (German National Railways) has had its proposed takeover of freight carrier English Welsh & Scottish Railways cleared by the European Commission on competition grounds. The European Commission said in a November 7 statement on its website that the proposed merger of Deutsche Bahn and EWS would "not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area" as there is a lack of geographical overlap between the two companies' operations.
