Legal action is started against Xstrata's Wandoan export coal project

Xstrata is facing a legal challenge to the granting of a mining lease for its $6 billion Wandoan export thermal coal project in the Australian state of Queensland from 13 objectors including environmental group Friends of the Earth. A preliminary sitting of the Queensland Land Court on May 4 set a court hearing date for the case of August 22 when objectors intend to call into question the already granted mining lease and draft environmental authority for Xstrata's 75%-owned Wandoan project.
