Tight supplies pushed styrene prices higher this week, with deals heard done as high as 55 cents/lb for January. The deal was done after the close of assessment on Friday, so it was not included the weekly assessment. The price on Friday was assessed at 53.05 cents/lb FOB USG. The assessment represents a 3-to-30-day price as of Friday, and assumes a 54 cents/lb price for the middle of January. The assessment was nearly 2 cents above last week’s assessment. The balance of December was assessed at 52.55 cents/lb FOB USG. On Wednesday, a US January styrene deal was heard traded at 53 cents/lb FOB USG. Specifics about the deal could not be confirmed, but market sources said a 53 cents/lb deal would most likely be a smaller parcel — below 5kt — destined for South America.
