HDPE film prices increased 2 cents/lb on firm demand from South America. Offers were heard at 55 cents/lb delivered in railcars to Houston or 57.5 cents/lb FAS Houston. The US price was the most competitive compared to other regions attempting to export to South America. The blow molding spot market was quiet. There were bids at and under 54 cents/lb FAS Houston but no offers. “There’s just no spot offers now,” a trader said. “It’s all about who you have relationships with,” the trader added in reference to who can get material from US producers. There was an offer at 55 cents/lb in railcars in late August that most traders said was at least 2 cents/lb too high considering buy ideas but now the producer who had offered was heard to be sold out, another trader said. The regional CFR markets were too low to support prices at 55 cents/lb railcar, which begged the question of where did the material go. Either the producer lowered the price quietly and sold out or withdrew the offer to sell into a higher priced domestic market.
