Asian PET bottle chips rose $15/mt this week on higher feedstock costs, with the FOB Northeast Asia benchmark closing at $1,170/mt and the FOB Southeast Asia benchmark settling at $1,190/mt. For September loading cargoes, producers in China were offering at $1,170-1,180/mt FOB, while South Korean producers were offering at $1,190- 1,200/mt FOB. The price disparity between Chinese and South Korean offers was attributed to freight costs, said a South Korean producer. “Freight from China to Eastern Europe is at least $15-20/mt higher than freight from Korea,” he said. “That’s why Chinese producers must keep their offers lower to offset the freight cost and stay competitive.” In Southeast Asia, offers were at $1,200-$1,210/mt FOB. Traders said few deals were done this week as it is only the first day of September so both buyers and sellers were still observing the market.
