The US styrene price fell below 47 cents/lb this week as falling feedstocks resulted in lower variable costs. With spot benzene for August priced near 283 cents/gal FOB USG, and spot ethylene near 34.125 cents/lb, variable costs for styrene production in the US were near 43.65 cents/lb. Producers would normally add 3 to 4 cents on top of variable costs to cover fixed costs and profit, putting notional offers between 46.5 and 47.5 cents/lb, based on feedstocks. One producer on Friday said he could sell at 47 cents/lb following the recent drop in feedstock prices. Buyers, though, were unlikely to step in and buy unless the price fell below 46.5 cents/lb, sources said. The European September styrene price was assessed at $1,099/mt on Friday, up nearly $15 from Thursday.
