London — Rising European ethylene prices were eating into ethyl-benzene styrene margins, such that an NWE benzene-styrene spread of $200/mt was now too low, a producer said Wednesday. "We need a spread of $250/mt because of increased ethylene costs (recently). Ethylene is getting more and more expensive, it is short, and this has had an impact on feedstocks," a European SM producer said. "There is a $200-300/mt delta between US and European-produced ethylene, and therefore a $70-90/mt cost differential for a ton of styrene produced in Europe versus other regions," a European SM producer said.
