Buying interest in the US butadiene market this week remained largely absent as NYMEX crude futures for September plunged over $5/barrel Thursday. This, according to a source, subsequently sparked a good deal of uncertainty around the globe. Soft demand over the month of August has dragged down the US spot price despite sources that affirmed there was a short supply of butadiene in July. This shortness in the US butadiene market drove the spot price up to as high as 225 cents/lb, assessed July 8. The spot butadiene price Friday was assessed at 190 cents/lb, flat to last week, as no spot deals were heard done over the week. After the market-on-close assessment window Friday, however, butadiene was heard pegged in a range of 180-185 cents/lb. Some sources continued to to talk the September contract price at a rollover from August. Lower August spot prices were cited as the reason behind a likely rollover, added one source.
