The US polypropylene market was holding steady this week as many participants adopted a wait-and-see attitude amid the volatility in the financial and energy markets. The market entered Wednesday without a contract settlement for August as key participants in the feedstock propylene market put negotiations on hold given the current conditions. Until late last week, talk in the propylene market was of a likely 2- cents/lb increase for August, which would have translated into a similar hike for PP. However, since the losses in the energy complex, all bets were off, a propylene buyer said, adding, “I’m still hoping for a flat settlement.” Spot refinery- grade propylene, considered a good indicator of the propylene market, was last heard done lower at 68 cents/lb for August this week. Back in PP, market sources talked the spot market flat this week, with generic prime homo in the mid-to-high 80’s cents/lb. Platts’ FAS Houston price was around $1,950/mt, too expensive to export beyond Central America, market sources said.
