Domestic prices reversed course as sentiment weakened significantly from the drop in feedstock prices. Ethane fell to 69.25 cents/gallon, down just under 14 cents/gallon, and gave integrated producers a cash cost of ethylene at 29.22 cents/lb. Producers were still trying to push their 5 cents/lb domestic price hike, but the lower feed costs, in addition to buyers freezing up due to the drop in financial and oil markets, made buyers hesitate on building inventory. In the spot export market, deals were heard Friday last week at 69 cents/lb FAS Houston. However, once the news of the US downgrade played out in the markets Monday, no traders wanted to touch a price over 66 cents/lb. Producers did not have any pressure to reduce prices, but with CFR Brazil values in the mid-$1,500’s/mt, buying FAS Houston close to the CFR Brazil level did not make sense for traders.
