Domestic prices were not settled yet for September but participants said there would be cost pressure from MEG and paraxylene that would support PET producers’ 3 cents/lb price increase. If successful, PET contracts would be at 62-63 cents/lb. MEG contracts are already up 1.5-2 cents/lb in September, but PX contracts were still under negotiation. There was an expectation that the xylene contract would go up at least $60/mt, the amount Asia’s PX CP’s rose, but the US and Asia contracts went in different directions in August, which made it even more difficult to estimate what the US would do in September. Participants also anticipated higher prices in October as raw materials continued to climb.
