The European polystyrene market continued to use BASF’s proposal of a Eur35/mt [$43/mt] decrease as a yardstick for June negotiations, with no other producer officially announcing its intentions. With some larger accounts yet to be settled, producers were still trying to limit the price decrease to a lower figure whereas consumers said they would aim for anywhere between a Eur50-70/mt decrease following a Eur73/mt decrease in the June styrene monomer barge contract. “There’s no huge supply problem right now so they can’t wish through a Eur70/mt extra margin increase,” said one consumer in response to producers’ original arguments for a rollover.
