The European Court of Justice has ruled the "golden shares" held by the Spanish government in Repsol-YPF and other former state-run companies are in breach of EU law on the free movement of capital between member states. In a statement, the Luxembourg court said Spain's influence over Repsol goes beyond that needed to achieve an "objective of safeguarding supplies" of oil products and ordered Madrid to change its legislation.
