Handful of companies gear up to drill in closely watched Eastern Gulf

Four operators, including two E&P independents, have filed exploration plans with the US government for eight offshore prospects in the controversial Eastern Gulf of Mexico, a new deepwater frontier. Drilling could begin in earnest as soon as the first half of 2003, once permits are issued and rigs secured. Drilling already has commenced on a prospect dubbed Barracuda.
