Hess 1Q profit up, but E&P called disappointing

Amerada Hess Apr 29 beat first-quarter forecasts to report a 25% jump in income year-on-year to US176-mil (US1.98/share), but some analysts warned an exceptional downstream environment outpaced a still weak upstream result. Refining and marketing earnings of US136-mil compared to a US22-mil loss a year ago, while E&P earnings of US146-mil were down 30%. Revenue of US4.2-bil was 45% above last year.
