LNG imports in Mexico surge amid supply deficit; US pipe imports down

Monthly LNG import volumes to Mexico were up more than 275% from February to May as domestic gas production and US pipeline imports continued to fall short of total demand, an analysis of Platts Bentek data showed Thursday. The recent growth in Mexican gas demand has come almost entirely from power generators. In May, power burn reached a record 3.9 Bcf/d and was up nearly 16% from February when generators used just under 3.4 Bcf/d. In June, Platts Bentek expects generators in Mexico to use more than 4.1 Bcf/d of gas.
