Sumas-Kingsgate price spread shifts as shale gas output climbs from B.C.

The ramp-up of Western Canadian shale production and declining supplies in Alberta have reversed - perhaps permanently - the historical differential of spot prices between the trading hubs of Sumas and Kingsgate, shifting a premium spread of years past to a negative one this year. An analysis of Platts prices show Sumas' premium to Kingsgate has shifted from about 10 cents on average in 2009 to 1 cent last year. The three-year average premium is 7 cents, while the five-year average is 9 cents, according to Platts historical prices.
