ROLE OF ESTATESECTOR IN THE PLANTATION SECTOR IN THE COUNTRY

I have had the privilege to be on the Rubber Board representing the large plantations for more than a quarter century and have witnessed the various phases the sector has passed through. We have celebrated the centenary of commercial planting in thiscountry a five years ago and also the golden jubilee of the Rubber Research Institute of India in 2005. This occasion is all the more important as it is the extension service which has taken rubber to smallest of small holdings and facilitated better transfer of technology helping India to be in the top of the ladder in terms of productivity. Natural Rubber is one commodity which has changed the life styles of millions of people in the world and it is all the more true in the case of India where the cultivation is taken up in a wide range of situations.
