The UPASI and Scientific Research

Very early in its history, the UPASI turned its attention to scientific problems posed by the crops cultivated by its members, and, as was natural at that time, the coffee men were the first to interest themselves in the possibilities of scientific assistance for plantation agriculture. The earliest meetings were, of course, largely occupied with the labour problems which were the immediate cause of the foundation of the UPASI and with questions of membership, organization, and finance, but by the third annual general meeting in 1896, there was time to turn to other problems.
