BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOTS revisited

Conservation International (CI) has extended its list of biodiversity hotspots from 25 to 34 (see table, p.35) portrayed in a spectacular book* released in February. The original list of 25 was widely reported, including in PLANT TALK 21 (pp. 30-32).Some 400 specialists contributed to the latest analysis. The twin criteria for inclusion remain unchanged: a hotspot has to contain at least 1500 species of vascular plants as endemics and has to have lost at least 70% of its original vegetation.
