JOHN PARKER: Promoting biodiversity and evolution

Professor John Parker has been Director of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden since 1996, He is now a key player in an expansive new phase in the development of one of Britain's most historic and prestigious centres for research and teaching in plant systematics. John Parker was born in Wallesey, Cheshire, where his family has lived for generations. He has always liked plants but there is too a direct link with the vegetable kingdom. His father was a greengrocer, his uncle a fruit farmer: "Fruit has been a continuing theme in my life, down to our annual Apple Day at Cambridge which attracts 3000 visitors!"
