Less than 30 days before we entered this neW Millennium, the peaceful American city of Seattle, renowned as the origin of the Starbucks coffee empire and grunge music, experienced its most explosive moments since nearby Mount St Helens erupted in 1980. In the space of week, Seattle earned a prominent place in modern history: the venue where the march of global trade was confronted by marchers protesting that a host of human rights and environmental issues deserved better consideration among the discussions about removing international trade barriers.
