An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of perimeter trap cropping for prevention of bacterial wilt in muskmelons. The experiment was established at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), Snyder Farm and Horticultural Unit II in Wooster, OH; North Central Agricultural Research Station in Fremont, OH; and Waterman Farm in Columbus, OH. Farmore F300-treated 'Space Station' kabocha squash seeds and Thiram-treated 'Athena' muskmelon seeds were sown into 72-cell plug trays containing BACCTO Professional Planting Mix in Apr. In Wooster, fertilizer (10-20-20 N-P-K) at 400 lb/A was broadcast, top dressed, and incorporated in the test field on 28 May. In Fremont, fertilizer (0-0-60 N-P-K) at 400 lb/A, (11 -52-0 N-P-K) at200 lb/A, (46-0-0 N-P-K) at 200 lb/A, and 14% granular Boron at 7 lb/A were broadcast and incorporated in the test field on 8 May. In Columbus, fertilizer (19-19-19 N-P-K) at 60 lb/A was broadcast on 9 May and 27 May, and starter fertilizer (9-45-15 N-P-K; 0.07 qt/50 gal water) was applied in the transplant water at 8 fl oz per plant. In Wooster, the field was disked, leveled, and raised beds were prepared; black plastic mulch installed over the beds on 2 Jun. In Fremont, the field was plowed on 21 Apr,and black plastic mulch was installed on 12 May.
