Fungicide impact on crown rust severity and yield of six oat varieties, 2013

The test site was prepared with a moldboard plow and disk harrow. Before planting, 222 lb/A of 9-24-24 fertilizer with 10 lb/A of sulfur (20-40-40-10S) was broadcast on 24 Oct, 2012 and incorporated with a disk harrow. On 14 Nov, six oat varieties were planted in a Malbis fine sandy loam (organic matter <1%). On 18 Feb, plots were topdressed with 121 lb/A of blended nitrogen fertilizer (33-0-0). The experimental design was a factorial arranged in a split plot with oat variety as the main plot and fungicide as the split plot treatments with four replications. Individual subplots were 8 ft wide by 25 ft in length. On 4 Feb, post-emergent weed control was obtained with a broadcast application of 0.4 oz/A Harmony DF + 12 fl oz/A Weedar 64 + Induce at 2pt/100 gal spray volume. Headline 2.09SC was applied at full flag leaf extension (Feekes growth stage (GS) 9) on 15 Mar and head extension (GS 10.2) on 2 Apr using CO2 back pack sprayer with four TX-12 nozzles spaced 18 in. apart at 40 psi in 15 gal/A ofspray volume. Crown rust was visually estimated on the flag leaves of 5 randomly selected tillers at dough stage (GS 11.2) on 25 Apr, using a 1 to 11 scale where 1 = no disease , 2 = 1 to 10% leaf area rusted, and 11 = 100% leaf area rusted. Plots wereharvested on 20 May and yield was reported at 10% moisture. Significance of interactions was done using PROC GLIMMIX in SAS. Statistical analyses on rust severity were completed on rank transformations of data, which were back transformed for presentation. Means were separated using Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) test (P<0.05). A significant oat variety x fungicide interaction for crown rust severity, but not yield, was observed. As a result, data for the latter dependent variables was pooled across fungicide treatment but segregated by fungicide treatment for the former.
