Evaluation of BASF fungicides for curative control of fairy ring on seashore paspalum putting greens, 2012

The evaluation was conducted at the Rodney R. Foil Plant Science Research Center in Starkville, MS on a four-year-old seashore paspalum sand-based putting green with a pH 6.2. Plots were mowed daily at 0.125-in. and vertical mowed with light topdressing weekly. Core aerification plus topdressing was conducted on 18 Jun. Monthly fertilizer applications were applied at the rate of 1 lb N/1000 ft2 and 0.5 lb K/1000 ft2. Treatment plots measured 4 ft x 10 ft with a 2 ft alley between blocks. The study was arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The wetting agent Tournament-Ready~R was applied to all plots at 8.0 fl oz/1000 ft2 prior to the start of the trial, and subsequent applications were made at the rate of 4.0 fl oz/1000 ft2 prior to each treatment application. All treatments were initiated on 20 Aug with three subsequent applications on 14 and 21 day intervals, ending 1 Oct and 22 Oct respectively. Fungicide treatments were applied in water equivalent to 2.0 gal/1000 ft2 at 40 psi using a CO_2-pressurized boom sprayer with two flat fan 11008-VS nozzles. All treatments were irrigated 0.25-in. immediately following treatment application. Disease severity was assessed as a visual estimate of the percent symptomatic area per plot. Turfgrass quality was assessed using a 1 to 9 scale (9=best, 6=acceptable) based on color, density, and uniformity. Both assessments were made biweekly. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and means were separated using Fisher's protected least significant difference test at P = 0.05.
