Fungicides for management of early blight and anthracnose in processing tomatoes

The trial was completed at Ridgetown Campus, University of Guelph (42.4406° N, 81.8842° W) in a sandy loam soil. Tomatoes were transplanted into twin rows on 23 May using a mechanical transplanter. Each set of twin rows was spaced 1.5 m apart with 50 cm between individual rows and within row spacing of 33 cm. Each treatment plot was 7m long and consisted of one set of twin rows. The trial was setup as a randomized complete block design with 4 replications per treatment. Frost damaged the plots on 25 and 26 May. Dead transplants were replaced on 29 May. Treatments were applied using a hand-held CO_2 sprayer with AT110-03VS nozzles using 300 L of water Ha~(-1), except for the first three applications of 496/A and 496/B which were applied using 200 Lof water Ha~(-1). The trial was drip irrigated as required. Kocide 2000 (3.2 kg Ha~(-1)) was applied weekly for suppression of bacterial spot. The trial was inoculated with tomato leaves infected with Alternaria solani on 22 July. One leaf per plot wasplaced within the canopy approximately 30 cm from the front of the plot. Overhead irrigation was also applied 25 and 26 July to supplement natural precipitation. Percent defoliation was estimated on a whole plot basis on 9, 20 and 28 Aug, and 11 Sept. Tomatoes were harvested from a 2 m section of each plot on 11 Sept. Fifty red fruit were randomly selected and assessed for anthracnose incidence after 3 days in storage at room temperature. Statistical analysis was completed using ARM 7 (Gylling Data Management, Brookings, SD).
