On 22 Oct 09, bare-root transplants from Canada were set into 50:50 methyl bromide:chloropicrin fumigated soil in plastic-mulched, raised beds. The beds were 28-in. wide on 4-ft centers and contained two staggered rows of plants spaced 15 in. apart within rows and 12 in. between rows. To provide inoculum, ‘Sweet Charlie’ transplants naturally infected by X. fragariae were set at regular intervals between rows in each bed, and later removed when the disease became established. Transplants were irrigated by overhead sprinklers for 10 days to aid establishment, then irrigated and fertilized through drip tape. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four blocks, each in a separate adjacent bed. Before applications were initiated, plants were removed to create individual plots in a staggered arrangement. Each plot contained 12 plants in 8.1 ft of bed. Experimental products were applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer delivering 100 gal/A at 50 psi through two TeeJet disc-core hollow cone nozzles spaced 12 in. apart on the boom. Applications were made from 2 Dec to 10 Mar on a 7-day schedule (15 applications), a 14-day schedule (8 applications), or before predicted rain/freeze events and/or after actual rain/freeze events (variable timing and number of applications). To suppress fungal diseases, Captan 80WDG was applied weekly with a tractor-mounted hydraulic sprayer in 100 gal/A at 200 psi (1.5 lb/A in Dec and early Jan; 3.0 lb/A in Feb and early Mar). Fruit were harvested twice weekly from 5 Jan to 16 Mar (20 harvests). Marketable fruit were counted and weighed to determine yield. Eight plants in each plot were individually evaluated for ALS severity on 9 Feb and 18 - 24 Mar. In Feb, leaves that were killed or >75% blightedby ALS (dead leaves) were counted and removed from evaluated plants. In Mar, dead leaves, partially blighted leaflets, and healthy leaves were enumerated. The number of partially blighted leaves was determined by dividing the number of partially blighted leaflets by three since each leaf has three leaflets. Individual plant assessments were averaged for each plot. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA (P = 0.05).
