Single-row experimental plots 65 to 80 ft long and 4 ft apart were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates in a naturally infested commercial field in Mecklenburg County, VA. Greenhouseproduced seedlings of 6 cultivars and 10breeding lines of burley tobacco and 3 cultivars of flue-cured tobacco were mechanically transplanted into untreated soil on 17 May. Selected flue-cured tobacco cultivars withpreviously characterized resistance were also transplanted into the test to serve as standards of comparison. Fertilizer and other cultural practices followed recommendations of Virginia Cooperative Extension. Disease was assessed on 19 Jun, 12 and 26 Jul, and 10 Aug. Disease incidence was calculated as the percentage of plants symptomatic, dead or missing on each assessment date relative to the original plant stand on 17 May.
