Comparison of seed treatments to Temik 15G in-furrow for control of southern root-knot nematode, 2007

Soil at the field site was Rumford loamy fine sand and was prepared for planting by ripping and bedding rows in stale beds of cotton from the previous season. Plots were two 30-ft rows spaced 38 in. apart and treatments were replicated in four randomized complete blocks. Seed treatments with Aeris Seed Applied System (SAS) and Avicta Complete Pak (CP) were applied overtop the base fungicide treatment of Baytan/Thiram/Allegiance. Treatments with Temik 15G were applied to the seed furrow at planting on1 May or as a side-dress application during cultivation on 3 Jul. Foliar sprays of Orthene 97 at 8 oz/A were applied to all plots on 31 May and 19 Jun for thrips control. Thereafter, standard practices were followed for cotton production in Virginia. Soil samples for determining nematode populations were collected on 24 Jul, and a composite sample of replications was processed by a soil elutriator and sugar flotation method for enumerating numbers and kinds of nematodes. Plots were harvested with a two-row spindle picker on 23 Oct. Yield in bales/A was determined by weight of seed cotton and the gin turnout for samples taken from replicated plots. Rainfall in May, Jun, Jul, Aug and Sep was 1.66, 1.33, 4.16, 0.71 and 4.09 in. below normal, respectively, and Oct was 1.74 in. above normal. Rainfall during the period totaled 17.56 in., which was 10.21 in. below normal. Average minimum air temperatures were normal ( +- 1degF) in Jun, Jul and Sep, 2degF above normal in Aug, 3degF above normal in May, and 9degF above normal in Oct. Maximum air temperatures were near normal in May and Jul, 3degF above normal in Jun and Sep, 5degF above normal in Aug and 10degF above normal in Oct according to records from a NOAA station 14 miles northwest of the test site.Normal represented the mean for the past 74 yrs of records. Fisher’s Protected LSD was used in the analysis of data for significant differences in treatments at P=0.05.
