First report of leaf spot caused by Bipolaris spicifera on switchgrass in the United States.

Surveys conducted in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, in December 2007, on switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) cv. Alamo showed the presence of light-to-dark brown leaf spots Disease distribution was patchy, infecting -10% of the plants. Patches had mild to severly infected plants with stunting in areas of severe infection. The pathogen was identified as Cochliobolus spicifer based on morphological, genetic (internal transcribed spacer) and pathogenicity tests. This is thought to be the first report of leaf spot caused by C. spicifer on switchgrass in the USA.
