Comparison of seed treatments to Temik 15G in-furrow for control of southern root-knot nematode, 2008

Soil at the field site was Rumford loamy fine sand and was prepared for planting by ripping and bedding rows in stale beds of cotton from the previous season. Plots were two 30-ft rows spaced 38 in. apart and treatments were replicated infour randomized complete blocks. Seed treatments were applied by personnel at Syngenta Crop Protection overtop a base fungicide treatment of A15436 FS 31.0 g/100 kg seed. The treatment with Temik 15G was applied to the seed furrow atplanting on 5 May. Orthene 97 at 8 oz/A was applied to all plots on 3 Jun for thrips control. Thereafter, standard practices were followed for cotton production in Virginia. Soil samples for determining nematode populations were collected on 18 Jun (notshown), 22 Jul, and 3 Oct as a composite sample of replications. Soil samples were processed by a soil elutriator and sugar flotation method for enumerating numbers and kinds of nematodes. Plots were harvested with a two-row spindle picker on 29 Oct. Yield in bales/A was determined by weight of seed cotton and the gin turnout for samples taken from replicatedplots. Rainfall in May, Jun, Jul, Aug and Oct was 0.39, 2.73, 0.29, 3.53 and 2.67 in. below normal, respectively, and Sep was 1.54 in. above normal. Rainfall during the period totaled 19.63 in., which was 8.11 in. below normal. Average minimum airtemperatures were normal ( +- 1deg F) in Jul, Aug and Oct, 2 deg F above normal in Sep, 3 deg F above normal in Jun, and 2 deg F below normal in May. Maximum air temperatures were near normal in May, Aug, Sep and Oct, 2deg F above normal in Jul, and 8 deg Fabove normal in Jun according to records from a NOAA station 14 miles northwest of the test site. Normal represented the mean for the past 75 yrs of records.
