A New Class of Tailor Made Hydroxy Acrylate Copolymers for Fast Drying,Low VOC Polyurethane Clearcoats

Hydroxy acrylate copolymers are widely used in various paint applications such as automotive clearcoats.These copolymers are often upgraded with the acrylic or metha-crylic adduct of glycidyl versatate to give coatings that combine low VOC with excellent appearance and superior chemical and environmental resistance.VOC regulations for car refinish coatings have pushed binder producers to reduce the molecular weight of acrylic resins.Unfortunately,this has detrimental consequences on the drying speed of the derived coatings and hence on the productivity of the body shops.This paper presents various options that have been investigated to compensate for this effect.Excellent results have been obtained by modifying styrene/acrylic copolymers with hydroxymaleate esters.The new copolymer polyols have been formulated into high performance,fast drying clearcoats.
