This is the first of two articles investigating the effect of moisture on the adhesional forces acting between individual particles and flat surfaces. The experimental techniques and results of previous workers have been reviewed and possible reasons for the wide scatter of reported experimental data are given. In the second part, a novel sequence for measuring the adhesional force will be described and new experimental results will be given. [References: 60]
