A new generation of radiation curable poiyurethane dispersions (UV-PUD's) for pigmented coatings offers superior chemical and mechanical resistance without the need for additional thermal crosslinkers. The demand for environmentally friendly pigmented coatings with outstanding chemical and mechanical resistance is increasing. Radiation curable poiyurethane dispersions comply particularly well with this demand due to their waterborne nature and to their rapid radiation curing speed combined with the associated productivity [see Ref. 1]. They have a good colloidal stability and a low viscosity which makes them particularly suitable for application by spray, curtain or roller. So far, a limitation of the technology was reached when the radiation curable poiyurethane dispersions were formulated with organic or inorganic pigments in order to obtain a colored decorative coating on the wood substrate.
