Easily dispersible organic pigments for effcient paint manufacture

Organic pigments are very well accepted by paint manufacturers due to their high tinctorial strength, brilliance and color purity, which allow for the production of a wide variety of attractive color shades. However, the processing of organic pigments to achieve optimum color properties represents a challenge for paint producers, as their dispersion process is frequently associated with high manufacturing costs and high expenditure. Optimization of existing processes could greatly assist in saving time, money and . energy. In this paper a general concept for the increase of paint production efficiency is presented based on the com-bination of pigment production technologies and polymer design. Easily dis-persible organic pigments are obtained by adsorption of suitable polymeric dispersing agents on the pigment particle surfaces. Thanks to the surface treatment, separation, wetting and stabilization of the pigment particles during the dispersion is much easier than for conventional pigments and thus paint manufacture can be achieved with less effort and less complex equipment. Through the selection of the appropriate dispersing agents, the surface properties of the pigments can be best matched to fulfill the requisites of different paint systems, from solvent- to water-based.
