At the start of this year, another important legal regulation to improve air quality has been put into force by the European legislator. The new EU directive aims to considerably reduce solvent-based emissions.The so-called VOC ("volatile organic compound") guidelines have defined stricter limits for the emission of solvents into the environment. Although the share of solvent-based coating materials has dropped from 40 to around 20 percent over the last 10 years, it is to be reduced to an absolute minimum in the foreseeable future. However, it is not just the legislator that puts pressure on the paints and coatings industry, even consumers are increasingly demanding water-based products. This is due to society's continuously growing environmental awareness.
